Cliff had no idea his pursuers had given up. He continued working his way toward higher ground. Besides worrying about Dean Halloran, Cliff was bothered by being hungry. Encountering a predatory animal was another concern, but so far, he had seen very little wildlife. The animals in the forest undoubtedly heard him coming and made sure they were out of sight.

He continued in the same northwesterly direction. The game trails he was following generally curved along the side of the increasingly taller hills. Cliff encountered two more dead ends, where the trail went under massive thickets. Working his way through the forest off a trail was time-consuming, and he worried his pursuers might catch him.

Cliff held onto his belief that Kelly was smart enough and doggedly determined to keep searching for him. He clung to the idea that each day he stayed alive brought his rescue one day closer. His rational mind knew it might take her a month or longer to unravel the mystery of his disappearance. Cliff did not care to think about the odds of his survival for that length of time. Still, each day meant something.

He wished he knew more about what was edible. Hunger plagued him. Dandelion leaves and the occasional feast of blackberries or raspberries were hardly enough to sustain him. He remembered hunger like this in his first few months in the prison compound. During that period, he had confidence that the government was providing enough calories for the prisoners to work. Cliff suspected that now he was falling far short of his body’s requirements.

Finding sources of water had, at least, been easy so far. He had only encountered one dangerous animal when he saw a mother bear and her cub. As soon as he spotted them, he stood stock still and waited for them to move on.
